O ítrio-90 tem duas características inerentes de segurança para profissionais e pacientes. São essas:

  • a pequena profundidade de penetração das emissões de radiação beta em tecidos e no ar
  • a meia vida relativamente curta de 64,1 horas

Depois de receber o implante, o paciente se torna efetivamente a fonte de radiação.

  • Porém, os pacientes representam um risco de radiação muito limitado para os profissionais médicos, familiares, amigos e público em geral devido à pequena penetração nos tecidos e emissão de radiação beta.
  • Algumas precauções gerais devem ser observadas e os regulamentos locais podem se sobrepor a estas diretrizes gerais.
