Under local anaesthetic, a specially trained interventional radiologist makes a small incision, usually into the femoral artery near the groin (A).
A microcatheter is then guided through the artery to pre-specified site in the hepatic artery (as identified during the pre-treatment planning) (B) where the SIR-Spheres® Y-90 resin microspheres are administered through this catheter (C, D). (For further details see Treatment Steps and Peri-Procedural Medications)
The whole procedure may take around 60-90 minutes. After the procedure is completed, it is recommended that patients have a scan to confirm the placement of the SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres in the liver.
Patients will be monitored for a few hours after the procedure and most patients are discharged within 24 hours.
