When Carolyn Murrah was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2014 at the age of 45, her one request was quantity of life over quality of life. With five young kids at home, she wanted as much time as possible to watch them grow up, regardless of pain or discomfort treatments might cause.
After years of fighting extreme fatigue, which the doctors attributed to her anemia and busy life as a stay-at-home mom, Carolyn knew something more serious was going on and asked her doctor for an endoscopy and colonoscopy. She was immediately diagnosed with colon cancer. From there, things happened quickly. The next day, she was referred to a surgeon and underwent pre-operative procedures and a CAT scan where doctors stopped counting the tumors at 30. A portion of her colon was removed just a few days later.
After eight rounds of chemotherapy, her doctor recommended Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) using SIR-Spheres® Y-90 resin microspheres. She was referred to an interventional radiologist who walked her through the procedure in detail. Carolyn says SIRT was the easiest of any of her treatments in terms of side effects and how well the tumors responded. Following one round of SIRT, Carolyn showed no evidence of disease. Almost all treatments and drugs can produce unwanted side effects. Some side effects following a SIRT procedure can be minor, making patients feel uncomfortable, but a small number can be serious. Every patient is different in how he or she reacts to a treatment. Many patients experience abdominal pain or tightness in their abdomen, nausea and loss of appetite which normally subsides within a week.
While her fight with metastatic colorectal cancer is not over, Carolyn continues to share her story to help inspire others. She encourages other cancer patients to ask their doctors about SIRT because of its effectiveness and minimal side effects that allowed her to lead as normal life as possible. Today, Carolyn is thankful to SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres for making her goal of as much time as possible with her children come true, and she hopes it becomes a more common treatment for eligible patients in the future.

Important Safety Information
Almost all treatments and drugs produce unwanted side effects. Most side effects following a Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) procedure are minor, but a small number can be serious. Every patient is different in how he or she reacts to a treatment. Many patients experience abdominal pain or tightness in their abdomen, nausea and loss of appetite which normally subsides within a week. Patients also develop a mild fever that may last for up to a week, and fatigue which may last for several weeks.
In rare instances, a small number of microspheres may inadvertently reach other organs in the body, such as the gallbladder, stomach, intestine, lung, or pancreas. If SIR-Spheres® Y-90 resin microspheres reach these organs, they may cause inflammation and potentially ulceration. These complications are rare, but if they do occur they may require additional medical treatment.
