“There is nothing I can do for you. You are going to die.”
Imagine hearing that from your doctor as you hold the hand of your spouse. On Mother’s Day. That is exactly what happened to Darla Rogers.
Darla remembers the day vividly. Late on a Saturday night her husband insisted she go to the ER for pain she was experiencing in her lower stomach. Both feared it was appendicitis and it just couldn’t wait. Urgently, she went. Darla was seen immediately, given a CAT scan and then they waited. The surgeon came back with tears in his eyes. He told her that she had stage IV colon cancer. “There is nothing I can do for you. You are going to die.” Absolutely stunned, she vaguely remembers the oncologist coming into the room. The other thing she remembers from his visit were his additional words, “Darla, you need to fight for your life!” and that is exactly what she intended to do.
After a weekend hiding in the barn to cry, Darla was fitted with a port and started chemo a week later. She went to a local cancer center and began standard chemotherapy for mCRC after her diagnosis, her insurance company called and suggested she move to the Huntsman Cancer Institute to see Dr. Ryan O’Hara. Dr. O’Hara is the IR responsible for suggesting SIR-Spheres® Y-90 resin microspheres and she has been treated 3 times since her initial diagnosis.
She described the recovery from SIR-Spheres microspheres as initially challenging. She was weak, fatigued and nauseous for about a week. Then she woke up one morning and every hour that day she kept feeling better and better. Three weeks post treatment she was climbing a mountain in Montana! Today she feels great. She is working in her garden – it is the envy of the neighborhood. While we spoke she was chasing around her young grandchildren. She was quick to tell me her exciting news that grandbaby number 4 is due September 5th. She is so excited!
As you can imagine, Mother’s Day is a special day for her. It’s an emotional day because it is the anniversary of sorts and she holds them a little more dear now given the diagnosis. This year she spent it with her family as well as packing her bags for a trip to Hawaii. She said she was considering going skydiving!

Important Safety Information
Almost all treatments and drugs produce unwanted side effects. Most side effects following a Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) procedure are minor, but a small number can be serious. Every patient is different in how he or she reacts to a treatment. Many patients experience abdominal pain or tightness in their abdomen, nausea and loss of appetite which normally subsides within a week. Patients also develop a mild fever that may last for up to a week, and fatigue which may last for several weeks.
In rare instances, a small number of microspheres may inadvertently reach other organs in the body, such as the gallbladder, stomach, intestine, lung, or pancreas. If SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres reach these organs, they may cause inflammation and potentially ulceration. These complications are rare, but if they do occur they may require additional medical treatment.
Please contact your health care professional about your condition and additional information concerning SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres.
